Driving Focus And Interest In Cost Savings

Introduction Most internal projects fail because everyone feels that they take time away from business generating tasks. We helped an organisation generate active participation in their cost saving exercise through a simple set up.

A Government organisation had decided to implement a cost saving exercise but wanted the rank and file to participate with enthusiasm. Given that this was a Government body, they had not ever looked at ways and means of involving everyone in such initiatives - plans were typically formed by senior management and executed by the respective teams. There was a need to motivate teams and gain an enthusiastic participation in the cost saving programme.
In order to generate interest in the programme of cost saving without prescribing or ordering the same, we needed a device that could be used to get people together and explain the important contribution that each person could make. After much ideation it was decided to use the Christmas celebrations as an occasion to disseminate the message - This was one occasion when everyone would be present before the effective close of business for the year. Yet, the idea would be powerful enough to bring the participation after the holidays, in the beginning of the new fiscal.                                                                                                                                                             We engineered exercycles to power dynamos which in turn generated the electricity to light up the Christmas Tree. The idea was to invite everyone to 'power' the lights by taking turns to pedal continuously and ensure that the lights are on. The act of generating electricity would also bring focus on the cost saving aspect in a strong way and further the storytelling.
The event was a grand success and the intent behind the programme was clearly communicated. The overall team was enthused and came back with a strong focus on the programme that was kickstarted on January 1st, with the new fiscal.
